New Mexico Energy Star partner
New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department is an Energy Star partner in New Mexico. New Mexico Energy has a variety of incentives to help those interested in upgrading their homes for energy efficiency. Some of the incentives include Solar Market Development Tax Credit, Sustainable Building Tax Credit, Geothermal Heat Pump Tax Credit. PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) program helps eligible homeowners cover the purchase and installation costs of renewable-energy systems.
The common issues faced by New Mexico homeowners include drafty windows and doors, rooms that are too hot or too cold and high energy bills. A whole-house philosophy is the chief approach to deal with these and similar problems.
New Mexico’s weatherization program
New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority administers New Mexico’s weatherization program. The program provides cost-effective energy efficient upgrades to residents of New Mexico that meet established income criteria. Housing types eligible for the program include mobile homes, single-family houses and multifamily units. Both renters and homeowners are eligible. People over 60 years of age, persons with disabilities and families with children are given preference in the program. Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) are qualified automatically.
The most common weatherization services performed are weather-stripping and caulking, replacing a high-energy consuming refrigerator with an energy-efficient refrigerator, replacing glass panes/windows, installing insulation, tune ups, replacing incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs, repairing/replacing the heating unit, installing carbon monoxide detectors.
The New Mexico Weatherization Program helps residents of New Mexico cut high utility bills, increase safety and comfort of their homes in addition to creating local jobs and reducing pollution.
